Inspiring Women for International Women’s Day

4/25 - Madam CJ Walker

I have an obsession with the history of cosmetics and this woman is one of the greatest of all time. Little remembered today, she was America’s first self made female millionaire. Creating her first products (shampoo and hair tonic) out of necessity to treat her own hair loss, she soon saw that there was a gap in the market for products designed for black women. She also trained other black women to give them the skills necessary to create their own businesses.

I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen. And from there I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations. I have built my own factory on my own ground.

One my of idols.
